BACKGROUND

The very Genesis

Short Story about Orishaba Sarah, the Founder of this NGO.

I grew up in a poor family with a single mother. We were six children, and I was the third. Because we had no money and no nearby school, all of my brothers and sisters dropped out and got married. I stayed home with my mother in a small grass-thatched house, where we even lived with two goats. At night, we used dry grass to make light.

My mother started brewing local banana alcohol to sell. With the small money she earned, she managed to take me back to school. I studied up to Senior Four and got the Uganda Certificate of Education. Sometimes I was sent home when she had no money, so she sold a goat to pay the balance. After some time, the business stopped and she couldn’t support me anymore.

I stayed home and helped her with chores. Later, I got married and had two daughters. But life in that marriage was very hard, so I decided to leave and return home with my children. I found that two of my sisters were also divorced and back home with their children. We became a big, poor family again.

Later, I got a job as a porter in Bwindi National Park. I carried tourists’ bags during gorilla tracking trips. This helped me support my family and gave me hope. I always dreamed of fighting poverty and helping others like me.

I met a kind friend who helped me start an organisation. Today, we support 27 needy families, including single mothers, orphans, and people living with HIV/AIDS. We are working together to build better lives.
